A festival is an event or a celebration of a group of people or tribe that centers on the characteristic aspect of that tribe and its religion or culture. Every year, festivals are celebrated in Ghana by different groups of peoples and tribes.

Ghana is a country with diverse cultures, as such, festivals are celebrated to show the rich culture and heritage of the people.

Festival celebrations in Ghana are colorful, vibrant and a big occasion. A lot of preparations, planning and activities go into festival celebrations in Ghana. People believe that festival celebrations helps them to forge close bondage with their ancestors.

In Ghana, festival celebrations bring people from different cultures and religions together: religious leaders, political leaders, businessmen, tourists, etc. Festival celebrations also serves as a tourist attraction to attract more tourists and potential investors into the community.

So how are festivals celebrated in Ghana? What kind of activities and programs are organized to celebrate a festival. How a festival is celebrated in Ghana is dependent on many factors: tribe, people, religion, purpose and occasion.

Despite these factors, there are many things that are done in common by most the tribes and peoples to celebrate festivals.

Purification

Normally before festivals are celebrated in Ghana, the land or community is purified or cleansed. This is done to rid the land of evil spirits and any bad luck. It is normally done by the high priest and elders. In some communities there is a ban on drumming and noise making before or during the festival celebration.

Social Activities

A lot of social activities are held to celebrate festivals in Ghana. They include: drumming and dancing, swimming, musical concerts, beauty pageants, etc. This is done to foster a sense of communal love among the people. In the past, it was a good opportunity for the youth to find a suitable marriage partner.

Developmental Projects

During festivals, the peoples and chiefs use the opportunity to initiate developmental projects like building of schools, roads, hospitals and many other social amenities in their communities.

Grand Durbar

On the last days of the festival celebration, which is usually a Saturday a grand durbar is held. The paramount chief sits in state and is payed homage by sub chiefs and other important dignitaries.

Thanksgiving Service

A thanksgiving service is held, normally the first Sunday after the grand durbar in church to thank God for a successful festival celebration.
