The Northern Region, apart from being the largest region in Ghana, is a region blessed with diverse people and culture. The region is made up of many tribes and peoples. An important part of their culture is the celebration of cultural festivals. There are a lot of cultural festivals that are celebrated throughout the whole year by the different tribes and people in the region. Here are the top five cultural festivals celebrated in the Northern Region: 1. The Damba Festival The Damba festival is celebrated by the people of Dagbon, Mamprusi, Gonja and Nanumba. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the birth of the Holy Prophet of Islam. Some activities that are observed during the festivities include: prayers, fasting, dancing, drumming and feasting. There is also a display of horsemanship skills by men who mount and ride on horses. Chiefs also are dress colorfully in traditional hand-woven dresses and dance to the sound of music and drumming. 2. The Bugum Festival The Bugum festival is also known as the fire festival. It is celebrated by the Dagomba’s, Nanumba’s and the Mamprusi’s. The first month of the Dagomba calendar is called “Bugum Goli” which means, month of fire. During the celebration, there is a procession in the town, by the town folks holding torches amidst drumming and singing. 3. Kpini Chugu The Kpini Chugu festival is observed as a harvest offering to the gods. It is observed in the Dagbon, Mamprugu and Nanung traditional areas in the Northern region as a minor festival. There are no major activities during the celebration. 4. Jintigi Fire Festival The Jintigi fire festival is celebrated by the chiefs and people of Gonja Land. The Festival is celebrated every year in the month of April. The festivities are celebrated in Damango, which is the capital of the Gonja Traditional Area. During the celebration there is a procession at night with torches into the bush and outskirts of the town and villages. 5. Sonyor Deng The Sonyor Deng festival is a cultural festival celebrated by the Gonja people in Bole. It is a thanksgiving festival which is celebrated to pay homage to the Sonyor Kupo shrine at Sonyor in the Bole district. During the celebration the people present live bush animals to the shrine.
