The Northern Region, apart from being the largest region in Ghana, is a region blessed with diverse people and culture. The region is made up of many tribes and peoples. An important part of their culture is the celebration of cultural festivals. There are a lot of cultural festivals that are celebrated throughout the whole year by the different tribes and people in the region. Here are the top five cultural festivals celebrated in the Northern Region: 1. The Damba Festival The Damba festival is celebrated by the people of Dagbon, Mamprusi, Gonja and Nanumba. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the birth of the Holy Prophet of Islam. Some activities that are observed during the festivities include: prayers, fasting, dancing, drumming and feasting. There is also a display of horsemanship skills by men who mount and ride on horses. Chiefs also are dress colorfully in traditional hand-woven dresses and dance to the sound of music and drumming. 2. The Bugum Festival The Bugum festival is also known as the fire festival. It is celebrated by the Dagomba’s, Nanumba’s and the Mamprusi’s.  The first month of the Dagomba calendar is called “Bugum Goli” which means, month of fire. During the celebration, there is a procession in the town, by the town folks holding torches amidst drumming and singing. 3. Kpini Chugu The Kpini Chugu festival is observed as a harvest offering to the gods. It is observed in the Dagbon, Mamprugu and Nanung traditional areas in the Northern region as a minor festival. There are no major activities during the celebration. 4. Jintigi Fire Festival The Jintigi fire festival is celebrated by the chiefs and people of Gonja Land. The Festival is celebrated every year in the month of April. The festivities are celebrated in Damango, which is the capital of the Gonja Traditional Area. During the celebration there is a procession at night with torches into the bush and outskirts of the town and villages. 5. Sonyor Deng The Sonyor Deng festival is a cultural festival celebrated by the Gonja people in Bole. It is a thanksgiving festival which is celebrated to pay homage to the Sonyor Kupo shrine at Sonyor in the Bole district. During the celebration the people present live bush animals to the shrine. Homowo in the Ga language means to hoot at hunger. Homowo is celebrated by the Ga’s to hoot at hunger and rejoice in their harvest. It is celebrated by all the towns in the Ga state from May to August. During the Homowo festival “kpokpoi” a local dish of the Ga’s prepared with maize is eaten by the people. “Kpokpoi” is also sprinkled on the streets.  Aboakyire Festival This festival is celebrated by the people in Winneba. It is one of the top Ghanaian cultural festivals in the country. It is celebrated in May every year to commemorate the migration of the of Winneba people from the ancient Sudan empire. The name “Aboakyire” means to hunt for an animal. During the festival, the people hunt for a deer and offer it as a sacrifice to their god named “Otu’’ for protecting them during their migration. Akwasidae Festival The Akwasidea festival is celebrated by the Ashanti’s. The Akan calendar has nine months in a year. The Akwasidae festival is celebrated on the final Sunday of every month, which is six weeks. During the celebration they perform rites to honor personal and community ancestors. During the festival, a gathering called “akom” occurs in which there is a lot of drumming, dancing and singing to honor the abosom’s (lesser gods in the Akan tradition) and nsamanfo (spiritually cultivated ancestors).  Asafotufiam Festival The Asafotufiam festival is celebrated by the Adangba people in Ada, in the month of August. It is celebrated to remember the achievements and victories won by their ancestors in wars of settlement in that area. The Charlewote Festival The Charle Wote festival is also known as the Charle Wote Street art festival. It was first organized in 2011. The festival has provided a platform that bring arts, music, dance and performance out into the streets and closer to the people. The Charle Wote Festival is not associated with any ethnic group in Ghana. It is organized to celebrate and show case the diverse culture and heritage in Ghana. The past two editions were held in August, in the James Town township. The festival is put together by Accra Alt Radio.
