Fort Prinzenstein

Fort Prinzenstein: A Look at the Slave Dungeon in the Volta Region of Ghana Built in 1784

The Volta Region is one of the iconic regions in Ghana. It boasts of top tourist sites such as Mount Afadjato (the largest mountain in Ghana), the Volta Lake (the largest manmade lake in West Africa), Adomi Bridge, Wli Falls, Tagbo Falls, Tafi Atomi, and Wild Life Sanctuary. Fort Prinzenstein is one of them. Fort Prinzenstein is the only fort built by the colonial rulers in Keta, east of the Volta River. The fort was built in 1784 by the Danish traders to protect them against the Anlo Ewe as well as other colonial rulers who were evading the Volta coast. It later became a major slave dungeon used by the Danish traders to keep slaves before they were transported to the Caribbean.   Apart from the slave trade, the Danish traders also used Fort Prizenstein for the import and export of goods such as cowry shells, textiles, iron rods, gold, ivory, and brandy. Later in 1850, the Danish traders sold the fort to the British colonial rulers. The fort was further used by the British as a dungeon for slaves. After Keta became a British colony, the fort was used as a prison to keep people who flaunt the orders of the British governors. In 1980, part of the fort was destroyed by the strong waves of the sea. Finally, when Ghana gained independence, Fort Prinzenstein was released for the country. Later one, Ghana Museum and Monuments Board working with ICOMOS and the Danish Embassy helped to preserve remains of the fort in 1991 so that it will serve as a tourist destination for the Volta Region. As Ghana has become a tourism hub in Africa, Fort Prizenstein is visited by many tourists from countries such as the United State of America, the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Benin, Germany, and Finland. The fort has been nominated as a World Heritage Property. Interested in renting a car for your business and personal engagements in Ghana? Read this to Avoid Problems with Self-Drive Car Rental in Accra

Make sure you present the right copy of the following documents: passport/identity card and driving license. Read through your self-drive car rental document before you sign it. Use the following guidelines to avoid problems while booking a self-drive car rental in Accra. 1. Check whether you are eligible for driving Just because you can drive does not mean you should request for self-drive car rental in Accra. Car rental companies in Accra will ensure you have a legal and certified driving licensing and you also have the required driving skills to drive. Most car rental companies are afraid of serving clients who might engage in reckless driving and damage their car. Even if you have a license, are you in the right state to drive? 2. Return the vehicle on the agreed time One of the things most people do is to let the vehicle stay with them above the rental limit. This is very dangerous as some car rental in Accra might charge a penalty or late returning fees. In some cases, they will continue charging you for the daily rate as long as the vehicle stays with you. The best thing to do is to ensure you return the vehicle on time or request for more days and then make payment for it. 3. Ensure to keep the car in a good condition When you rent a vehicle, you are held liable for the staus of the vehicle. That means you have a responsibility to ensure you keep the vehicle in a good state as long as it stays without. This is very important as it facilities good business for the car rental company. Most people allow another fellow to use the car and the other fellow end up causing troubles such as reckless driving, selling off the vehicle to another party or parking the vehicle in the wrong place for police arrest. 4. Obey all road safety rules and regulations When requesting for a self-drive car rental in Accra, you need to make sure you stick with road safety rules and regulations. Don’t drink and drive and avoid driving in Accra when its raining heavily. Avoid driving the vehicle in muddy areas. If you are want to attend a wild party with friends, you might want to avoid trouble by not renting a car for this purpose. Rest when you are tired. Don’t drive tired. Ensure the car is fit before you take-off and check conditions after you return. Interested in renting a car for your business and personal engagements in Ghana? Read this Before Requesting for Self-Drive Car Rentals in Accra

It’s really nice to rent a car. But the best part is requesting for a self-drive. As for a self-drive, you get to move out when you want to, attend various meetings and work on many projects as your plan demands. Yea, it looks really nice to be doing the driving yourself. Nonetheless, you’ll be expending time that you can use to doing something if you should opt for a driver. If you are cool with a self-drive based on your travel needs, then please kindly read the following before opting for self-drive car rentals in Accra. 1. Look for a reputable self-drive car rental There are many car rental companies in Ghana, but their reliability varies. You don’t want to deal with a company that provides poor service or does not take good care of their clients. If you are opting for a self-drive, ensure that the car is first and foremost in a good condition. You’re not looking for a poorly maintained car. Selecting the best car rental company is the first step. 2. Check the vehicle status and conditions A lot of clients, because they are in haste, fail to do their homework. If you are requesting for a self-drive, here are some critical things you should know about the vehicle you are renting before paying any money: type/model of vehicle, vehicle’s mileage, age of the vehicle, engine status, availability of spare tires, first aid kit, availability of fire extinguisher and roadworthiness of the vehicle. 3. Check the vehicle insurance status Insurance is very important if you are renting a car for self-drive. Many car rentals in Accra understand the need for insurance, but where the issue lies is whether they have actually been paying the premium to keep the policy active. You might want to know the insurance status of the vehicle. What does the insurance cover? Is it only the driver or both the driver and the vehicle? In most cases, the car rentals in Accra include insurance in their pricing. 4. Check the fuel level of the vehicle The basic rule of car rental companies in Ghana is that you have to return the vehicle with a full tank. They give the vehicle out to their clients with a full tank and require the client to do the same. So, what you have to check here is that the vehicle has the required full tank they claim to be before you drive off. 5. Read through the terms before signing Most people just sign contracts without reading the terms of service. Self-drive is a different thing altogether and various car rentals in Accra have their own individual policies. Ensure you have read the contract carefully and ask questions before signing. Look at fuel charges, deposits, payment mediums, cancellation policy, vehicle status policy, kilometre limit delayed returning fees, discounts, and refunds. To ensure that tourists are not only treated to beautiful tourist sites but to good customer care as well, Mr Nsiah said players in the tourism industry will undergo capacity training. “The next thing we will do will be capacity building. As you know tourism has both a hard and soft sides it’s good to have all the nice hotels and good infrastructure but the service standards has to be comparable to what you find elsewhere but you need a critical mass of training people so that the culture is instilled across board” The report by CNN which placed Ghana fourth describes Ghana as the West African Nation of economic success and political stability. Ghana Ranked 4th on CNN Travel’s List of Places to Visit in 2019

Ghana Ranked 4th on CNN Travel’s List of Places to Visit in 2019

CNN Travel has released a list of 19 places to visit in the year 2019. Fourth on the list is Ghana, a country with some of the world’s most diverse and amazing tourist sites. In a news report by CNN, Ghana, which is West Africa’s poster nation for economic success and political stability is hoping to trade up its tourism status for 2019, with a campaign targeting the African diaspora whose ancestors were victims of the brutal slave trade of centuries gone by. Ghana’s ‘Year of Return’ marks 400 years since the first enslaved Africans arrived in North America. It’s a somber recognition of the evil that befell Ghana’s past inhabitants and their descendants — and the strength with which they’ve faced it. “Legacies of the slave trade are unavoidable. Cape Coast Castle, one of many historic coastal forts, was where slaves were held before being dispatched to America and the Caribbean.” “This brutal and fascinating reminder was visited by the Obamas in 2009 and Melania Trump in 2018.” For all the sobriety of this anniversary, what also awaits visitors to Ghana is the warm, intoxicating embrace of a country completely at ease with its identity rushing headlong towards a bright future. The capital, Accra, crackles with the dynamism of a city on the upswing, with a nightlife scene to match. For those wanting to escape its relentless excitement, Ghana’s 335-mile coastline boasts empty surfing spots like Cape Three Points, while its many protected wildlife zones, including Mole National Park, are home to wild elephants, Nolan warthogs and spotted hyenas. Beating Ghana to the first three spots on the list are Christchurch, New Zealand; Egypt and Fukuoka, Japan. Other places are Grand Canyon, United States; Hawaii Island, United States; The Hebrides, Scotland, UK; Jaffa, Israel; Kerala, India and Liechtenstein. The rest are Lima, Peru; New York City; Normandy, France; Oaxaca, Mexico; Oman; Plovdiv, Bulgaria; St. Barts, French West Indies; Space Coast, Florida, United States and Weimar, Germany. Background In July, 2018, ‘CNN And Be Ghana’, a video documentary on Ghana’s slave castles was aired on CNN’s programme, Inside Africa. In one month, the video went on air globally, with about 5,416,000 people watching it, many of them seeing it more than once. The documentary was part of a campaign by the government of Ghana to market the country as a tourism destination. The campaign, an initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture, was on air from June 11 to August 5, 2018. The 30-minute television documentary focuses on the Elmina castle. In it, CNN’s cameras follow the journey of a man who gave his name as Bartels, a diaspora African. After years of searching, he had traced his roots to Elmina and wanted to see and hear at first-hand what his ancestors went through from capture to shipment to the Americas. Even though some people criticised the move, saying the cost of the project (US$200,000.00) was too high, Catherine Afeku, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture said the government’s expectations went beyond financial returns. “Yes, we need the diasporan Africans to come in their numbers. In fact, I have told myself as Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture that 20,000 tourist arrivals from North America is not enough. We need in excess of one million African Americans to respond and come to Ghana.” Catherine Afeku has been severely criticised by stakeholders of the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture for not living up to expectation. However, she has, on countless times assured the stakeholders that government is putting its act together to get all their problems addressed. Source: GhanaWeb
