1. The Komas, were said to be the earliest known settlers in the area, now the Northern region. The Komas cannot be traced today but they have left behind a treasure trove from their period.
The major tribes in the present day northern region are the; Dagombas, Gonjas, Nanumbas, Mamprusis and Kokombas.
2. Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi. The regional capital, Tamale has a perfect blend of modern buildings mixed with traditional slum. Total population of Tamale alone is about 350,000 people.
3. The largest tribe by number and land area are the Gonjas, but the Dagombas are the most famous in the region. The Dagombas call their Kingdom, Dagbon. Although Tamale is the regional capital and also a Dagomba land, the paramountcy of the Dagbon overlord or King is in Yendi. The Dagbon overlord is called Yaa Na.
The Dagombas trace their ancestry from Zamfara, present day Nigeria.
4. The most popular and widely use means of transport in the Northern region is the motor bike or tricycle also known as motor king. It is considered the most most-bike friendly city in Ghana since it has the infrastructure set aside for the use these vehicles.
5. The region is characterized by high temperatures and dry weather especially during the dry seasons. The rains come between the months May and October. The dry season is between November and May and its characterized by the Harmattan winds which comes in from the Sahara Desert in December and January.
