Cape Coast is the capital of the Central Region in Ghana. It is a historical place, with many tourist sites. It used to be the nation’s capital in the then Gold Coast, until the capital was moved to Accra in 1877.

Cape Coast is famous for many reasons: they have the best senior high schools in the country, it was the first stop for Europeans in the Gold Coast and the town played a major role in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Cape Coast is popularly known for its tourist attraction sites.  Here are five tourist sites in Cape Coast you should definitely visit:

THE CAPE COAST CASTLE

Sure we can’t mention tourist sites in Cape Coast and not make mention of The Cape Coast Castle. It was built by the Portuguese in the 15th Century who were the first Europeans to arrive in Gold Coast. The Castle was used extensively in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. It is the second largest after the Elmina Castle in the country. The Castle is situated by the beach and it’s definitely a site you must see.

THE KAKUM NATIONAL PARK

Another must see tourist Site in Cape Coast. The Kakum National Park. Those who love nature and greenery will appreciate this place. It is situated 15 kilometers from Cape Coast. Trained tour guides are on hand to take you on a tour.

The park has the canopy walkway which is over 7 bridges and trees above 30meters.

 MONKEY FOREST RESERVE

This Monkey Sanctuary is close to the Kakum National Park and occupies 42 acres of land.  Many monkeys’ and different kinds of animals like the rare white antelopes, birds, turtles, glasscutters, porcupines, civet cat, alligators and many others make their home here.

It may not be famous as other tourist sites but definitely one of the tourist sites in Cape Coast you must visit.

ANOMABU CASTLE

Anomabu is a small town on the coast of the Mfantsiman Municipal Assembly. The population of the people number about 14,389 people. It is a popular tourist destination site for many who visit Cape Coast. In Anomabu is the Fort William also known as Anomabu Castle. It was constructed between 1753 and 1760.

Anomabu has one of the cleanest beaches in the country.

Fort Nassau

The Fort Nassau is situated near Moree in Cape Coast. It was the first castle to be built by the Dutch in Gold Coast for trading purposes. It is currently in ruin, but traces of it can be seen.
