Arguably, the Year of Return has raised the flag of Ghana very high and made the country very famous. Through the Year of Return, the country had received many highly accomplished and prominent celebrities whose visit to Ghana has triggered many countries to think, “What’s special about Ghana that all these celebrities are flocking in?”.
In 2019, the Ghana National Authority launched the Year of Return to mark the celebration of the end of the slave trade and the 400th-anniversary of the first African slaves that arrived in the United States. The campaign served as a way to enable Africans living in the Diaspora to remember, celebrate, and appreciate their roots.
Ghana was a slave trade hub in those days. Therefore, there were remains of the slave trade dungeons, castles, and other instruments used during the slave trade era. In honor of the celebration, many African-Americans decided to pay a solemn visit to Ghana and tour all the slave trade tour areas and many prominent areas in Ghana.
These are some of the top-celebrities who visited Ghana for the Year of Return in 2019:
1. Steve Harvey: He is a world-renowned TV talk show host. Steve visited Ghana with a team, toured tour sites, and also made efforts to contribute towards the nation’s development in the best possible way.
2. Kofi Kingston: He is the former WWE Champion. He visited Ghana at the peak of his career when he just won the WWE Champion. Fortunately, it happened to be the year of return. His remarkable wrestling achievements inspired many Ghanaians, to work hard, and achieve the impossible in life. Kofi Kinston visited many tourist sites, including the slave dungeons.
3. Danny Glover: He is an American actor and film director. He visited Ghana in honor of Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams’ Eminence Call during the Year of Return. Danny toured Jamestown and other notable tourist areas.
4. T.I: He is a famous American rapper, known for his hit songs. Towards the end of 2019, he paid visited to Ghana with his wife and team. The tourist sites he visited include Elmina castle and the surrounding areas.
5. Samuel L Jackson: He is a filmmaker and producer. In August 2019, he visited Ghana to shoot a film, documenting the slave trade in Africa. As part of his Year of Return tour, he had toured many areas and had dinner at Elmina with other Diaspora residents.
6. Lupita Nyong’o: She is a Kenyan Hollywood actor. She also came to the country at part of the “Year of Return” tour, checked in at the “Year of Return” Secretariat, and went to many tourist centers.
7. Hisham: He is a leading actor, known for his production of the “Blacklist” TV series. He was having fun and touring the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park of Ghana.
8. Ludacris: He is a famous American actor and rapper. He is known for the name Christopher Brian Bridges. He also toured the Cape Coast Castle, looked at ruins of the slave trade, the dungeons, and all others.
9. Beyoncé Giselle Knowles Carter: She is popularly known as ” Beyoncé.” He is a famous American songwriter, singer, and actress. Towards the end of the year, she surprised Ghanaians with her visit. She came with her husband, Jay Z, and daughter Ivy Blue.
10. Jay Z: He is an American rapper and singer. He toured Ghana with the family in an exclusive “Year of Ghana” visit to the country. While he did not do any live performance, many Ghanaians were thrilled with his visit.
Apart from these celebrities who visited Ghana for the Year of Return in 2019, there have been records of more than 200,000 other Diaspora residents who visited Ghana, creating more than $ 1.5 billion in net revenue for Ghana.
