Today is Ghana Constitution Day. Hurray!!!

Constitution Day is a maiden holiday declared by the current government of Ghana to commemorate coming into effect of the Fourth Republic without any form of coup d’état through military operations.

The day has been set aside to earmark how far Ghana has come in the acceptance and application of the Rule of Law, the 1992 Constitution, and the Democratic Governance.

Prior to the 4th Republic, Ghana had experienced myriads of coup d’état that have overthrown several presidents out of power and led the country into military governance. However, since the commencement of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana on 7th January 1993, the country has enjoyed peace and stability.

Therefore, the Constitution Day serves as a means to remember efforts made to ensure peace and stability after gaining independence and coming into effect of the 4th Republic.

The maiden Constitution Day Public Lecture will take place today, 7th January 2020. It will include a public lecture which will be delivered by the Rector of Ghana Academy of Arts and Science GIMPA, Professor Bondzie-Sampson on the topic, “Constitutionalism in Ghana’s Fourth Republic: Towards Functional Performance”.
