A lot of stories surround how the Paga Crocodile Pond came into being. One story is told that; a crocodile brought a dying man to the pond to drink some water. The man survived, and is believed to have declared that the pond sacred and hence, no harm should be done to the crocodiles.
The crocodiles in the pond are believed to be tamed and friendly. It is actually a taboo to harm or kill these crocodiles and even to eat crocodile meat. In Paga, which is home to the Kasene people, crocodile is considered a totem. They believe the souls of the people reside in the crocodiles.
The people in the town reside freely with the crocodiles in the pond. Local children swim alongside the crocodiles in the pond without fear of harm. The town people can also be seen washing in the pond without fear, as a crocodile lies by it side.
The amazing thing about the crocodiles in the Paga Crocodile Pond is its friendly nature to people and tourist. Many people and tourists who visit the Paga Crocodile Pond do take pictures sitting on the crocodile and holding its tail. It is probably the only place on earth you get to do this.
The crocodiles in the pond roam freely at the edge of the pond. When they are in the pond, the tourist guides whistle for them to come out whenever people come around. Tourists are allowed to take pictures with the crocodiles, after the crocodiles in the pond have been fed with chicken, which has to be provided for by the tourist.
