It is monkey time!
Are you a lover of monkeys? Actress Joanna Lumley said, “In Kenya you’ve got the great birds and monkeys leaping through the trees overhead. It’s a chance to remember what the world is really like.”
If you are an avid lover of monkeys, then the sure place for you to be is: The Boabery-Fieme Monkey Sanctuary in Ghana.
The Boabery-Fieme Monkey Sanctuary is located in the Nkoranza north district, in the Brong Ahafo Region. The place is found between two villages Boabeng and Fiema, hence it was named, The Boabery-Fieme Monkey Sanctuary.
The Sanctuary
The Boabery-Fieme Monkey Sanctuary covers about 35 hectares of land and is found between the two villages, Boabery and Fieme, which are a mile apart from each other.
There is also a grave site in the Boabery-Fieme Monkey Sanctuary. When monkeys in the Boabery-Fieme Sanctuary die, funeral rites are held for them just like it is done for humans! Dead monkeys are buried in a grave, inside the forest.
The Boabery-Fieme Monkey Sanctuary is also a home to wide range of trees, butterflies and birds as well.
The Monkeys
The monkeys in the Boabery-Fieme Sanctuary are considered sacred by the folks. It is said that for this reason the two communities, in 1975 came together and agreed to pass a law prohibiting people from hunting and harming the monkeys.
The sanctuary is home to two main species of monkeys. The Geoffrey’s Pied Columbus which numbers about 200 and the Campbell’s Mona Monkey, about 500 of them. They can be seen as one walks through the forest. Other species of monkeys like the Patas, Spot Nosed and Diana Monkeys have also been sighted in the forest but not in great number.
The sanctuary is said to be the only place in Africa where this species of monkey: The Geoffrey’s Pied Columbus and the Campbell’s Mona in great numbers. The monkeys also reside with the locals in the village. They can be seen in the homes of the locals jumping from one house to another.
