6 Things You Don’t Know About Mole National Park

The Mole National Park is located in the Northern Region of Ghana, precisely in the West Gonja District. The nearest town to it is Larabanga. The park is located on the grassland savannah and riparian ecosystems at an elevation of 150m.

It is one of Ghana’s most famous tourist site, but there are quite a number of things few people probably wouldn’t know about Mole National Park. Here are six (6) things you need to know about the Mole National Park.

1.The Mole National Park is Ghana’s first, largest and most prestigious protected national park. The total land area of the reserve is estimated to be 4,577 sq. kilometers. It was established in 1958.

2.The Mole National Park is the most visited of all the natural reserves and parks in the country despite its location and long ride from the national capital Accra (694km), Kumasi (449km) and Tamale (184km). it was listed as part of UNESCO World Heritage Center in the year 2000.

3.The Mole National Park is home to several species of animals and plants. According to records available there are about 742 plants and trees species. Most of the species here are rare.

Animals that make their home in the park include; elephants, baboons, monkeys, buffalos, leopards, hyenas, lions, antelopes, Hippos and over 300 bird species, notable among them are the martial eagle, white headed and palm nut vultures, herons, violet turaco, the red throated bee-eater and many others.

 

4.There is also a water fall in the park. It is the Konkori Water Fall. It is situated about 100km north-east of the park headquarters. It is not easily accessible due to its location in the park.

5.There are also caves in the Mole National Park. The caves served as home to the indigenes who fled from the Samori’s and Babatu’s who were known to be slave traders.

6.Whenever you make a stop at the Mole National Park, accommodation shouldn’t be a problem. There is the Zaina Lodge and Mole Motel to host you. There are also tour guides to make your time a memorable one.
