The Harmattan Season in Ghana is a season most people dread about due to the adverse conditions that comes with it. The Harmattan is a season in the West African Sub- Region that occurs between the month of November and March.  This occurs due to dry wind that is blown from the Sahara Desert into the sub region. The air is mostly hot, dry and carries dust with it. The Harmattan occurs during the dry season. Ghana is not excluded from this adverse weather condition.

During the Harmattan Season in Ghana, it rarely rains. The heavy amount of dust particles and fog in the air makes visibility very difficult for drivers and other road users. The aviation industry is not spared either. Most flights are either cancelled or delayed.  The intensity is felt the more as one travel further north of the country.

The Harmattan Season in Ghana also comes along with it, health complications. During this period, humidity is very low which can cause nose bleed and dehydration. The dust in the atmosphere, dry and hot nature of the weather causes dry skin and skin irritation.  Other health implications include itchy eyes, catarrh, cough and intensification of respiratory disease like asthma.

3. If you are an asthmatic patient, it is advisable to always have your inhaler with you.

4. For travelers who will be driving, it will be good to avoid driving late at night and early in the morning due to the hazy nature of the atmosphere during the Harmattan Season in Ghana.

5. Wear tight and fitting clothes and clothes that cover the whole body.

6. Health personals also advice that a lot of fruits and healthy foods (healthy fats: avocado, fatty fish) should be eaten and soft drinks should be avoided as much as possible.
