“Beyond the Return” Initiative: What Tourists Need to Know
“The Year of Return” Initiative has been one of the most successful tourism campaigns launched in West Africa. The campaign has made a huge impact on Ghana, West Africa, the Caribbean, and the US. It has built a strong awareness of the culture, history and the way of life of Africans. It enabled many Africans in the Diaspora to visit home, celebrate their roots and show appreciation of where they came from. According to the Ghana Tourism Authority, the “Year of Return” Campaign has attracted over 200,000 tourists from the Caribbean and the USA. The initiative also created over $1.5 billion in tourism revenues, helping to support Ghana’s economic development. But the initiative ended in January 2020. In appreciation of the efforts made by the Diaspora to Ghana during the “Year of Return,” the government also wanted to develop and create avenues where they can invest and be a part of the nation’s success story. This will create investments for them at home while they are working abroad. In view of this, the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Akufo-Addo launched the “Beyond the Return,” Campaign. He said, “So we can derive maximum dividends from our relations with the diaspora in mutually beneficial co-operation, and as partners for shared growth and development”. The President noted that the “Beyond the Return” initiative will help change the African narrative of hunger, disaster, and illegal mass migration. Other successful Africans in the Diaspora will get to support their brothers and sisters to become the best version of themselves. Investments in the form of equities, companies, organizations, and projects will also help the local people and boost the GDP growth of the country.
